Rhythm – 2 people task tsk tsk

March 9th, 2011 § Leave a Comment

So I decided to work on getting 2 people to do a single task. first, for each of them to do it individually, then as a pair. I forgot to ask if they felt any difference between the two ahaha

Task: Arrange the toy animals by height in 18s

Shin-hye(Individual)
1st T– 21s
2nd T– 25s
3rd T– 23s
4th T– 21s
5th T– 19s
6th T– 21s

Seung(Individual)
1st T– 30s
2ndT– 30s
3rdT– 23s
4thT– 24s
5thT– 22s

Shin-hye + Seung to do in 25s
1stT– 25s
2ndT– 19s
3rdT– 24s
4thT– 25s

Observations
* both always starts off with the big shaped animals first. probably easier to grasp.
* both arranged tallest to shortest from left to right respectively
* Shin starts with the same first few animals, the taller and bigger ones.
* Seung starts off with the same first 2 animals as Shin
* Seung taps her feet to keep time(pair)
* when they complete the task in less than 25s so they shift the toys around to occupy time
* Shin just feels the time, not keep track sec by sec. it’s just varying faster or slower compared to the previous try(individual)
* in pairs, one does the short end, the other does the tall end, then put together. it could be probably because of their sitting positions. Seung will start with the same first animal(big shape) so does Shin.

Task: Move from one side of the sofa to the other in 9s(Individual) + Move towards each other and hug!(Pair)

Yijia(Individual)
1stT– 10s
2ndT–8s
3rdT– 8s
4thT– 8s
5thT–8s

CC(Individual)
1stT–10s
2ndT–9s
3rdT–10s
4thT–11s
5thT– 10s

Yijia + CC to do in 9s
1stT– 10s
2ndT–12s
3rdT–10s
4thT–10s
5thT–10s
6thT–9s

Observations
*CC keeps track of time and Yijia follows her(pair)
*CC improvises– moving back and forth to occupy time
* so it seems there is always one person keeping time in each pair while the other follows

P.S. I’m not quite writing english with proper sentence structure(a number of shortcuts like a typical Singaporean I see) but you get what I’m trying to say dont you…

data collected from the 19 tasks

The main thread is that most people get it right on the 3rd try. some get it on the first(exceptional sense of rhythm) while some do not succeed even after 5 tries. I only asked a couple of them how they kept time, I should have asked every one as each person has their own technique. gah. I am really interested to continue this by involving more than 1 person in a task. it’s a level up as now it is when rhythms influence each other and does not operate solely on its own. I just have to find people who are interested and willing to do it. not everyone is interested you know.

groove to da Rhythm

Work done
19 tasks were carried out by different people. most tasks were given two types of time limit– a longer time and a shorter time, relative to the norm (e.g. 15s & 7s, indicated below), and each limit was a specific time on which the task has to be completed(no more, no less). a maximum of 5 tries were given for each limit. participants who hit the sweet spot on the first try had to repeat and achieve the same result the second time to reaffirm the first. each task was filmed and timed.

Tasks completed
1. remove jacket and put it on your lap (10s/4s)
2. rub your nose 5X horizontally(8s/2s)
3. clap 20X(12s/5s)
4. remove your scarf(15s/6s)
5. move from one end of the bench to the other(15s/3s)
6. open your clenched fist(13s/9s)
7. close your fingers> fist(26s)
8. jump 12X(12s/5s)
9. flip each page of a newspaper(30s/60s)
10. lie straight on a table(15s/8s)
11. sit on a chair(10s)
12. sing Twinkle twinkle little star(25s/14s)
13. smile, frown, open your mouth, normal expression(15s)
14. shout Hooray(7s)
15. sit on 4 chairs arranged side by side, moving from one end to the other(8s/18s)
16. move across a wall to reach for the phone and say Hello(30s)
17. pour water from a jug into 3 mugs, achieving equal water level in each(15s/22s)
18. unpack the items in your bag(18s/7s)
19. take 35 pieces of tissue paper out of the tissue box(18s)

Observations
1. I realised that there is mental action and physical action
mental– keep track of time + doing the task
physical– doing the task
if the task relies more on mental activity, it is more likely that participant will lose track of time. if the task is more physical, it is easier for the mind to focus on keeping track of time
2. it is easier to be accurate when time is short e.g. 3s vs. 24s
3. some people keep track of time by feeling/getting a sense of time rather than counting sec by sec mentally. one participant tapped her feet to keep time.
4. some participants did not quite understand how to achieve the objective of being exactly on time and completing the task, thus the first one or two tries were not executed accurately, leading to certain disproportionate measurements (e.g. 55s taken when given a time limit of 15s)
5. some participants did not fully understand what they have to do, they just did it
6. most participants, if not all, wanted to achieve the time target and went for 5 tries(max. no. of tries)
7. one participant practiced before the actual filming (cheating? ha ah ah)
8. some participants had a really good sense of timing
9. Task 19 failed because it will take a very long time to do since the tissue papers were stacked piece by piece on top of each other and not like how I imagined– once I pull out one, the next will emerge out of the box (like Singapore tissue boxes :p)
10. will like to try a task for more than one people. definitely more challenging!
11. I started off with tasks which were seemingly more on the physical side and allowed the participant to give full mental energy to keep time. will like to introduce tasks that require mental effort. eg. Task 17, separating a basket of apple and oranges, peeling clementines(?), doing a calculation but these seem to be tricky and confusing as it is testing skill as well when I’m focusing on rhythm and timing…
12. one participant used improvisation to keep the rhythm, which was really what I hope to see more, making the rhythm more natural and continuous rather than forced. a natural rhythm that is planned to time.
13. crazy people are much more suitable participants. yehehe
14. I do need to work on art direction/framing. when I do not plan (like impromptu), I find that I can’t quite get a good framing or know what’s the best angle or POV to capture the action(e.g. close up or full shot).

A big thank you to Shandy for helping me out! as well as the Goldsmith’s students who were willing (I think) participants :)
I intend to make these as short video clips and not have any printed material. doing a printed thing for this kind of activity is like documentation, it can be necessary and convenient to have and it can also be just-for-the-sake-of-it and an extra thing. unnecessary? I don’t know, yes if the videos can speak for themselves which they can. I’ll just have to spend more time with Final cut for the next few days :l
so tired. 救命救命救命
